Neurofeedback is a reward-based, painless, non-invasive, and drug free training system, that improves brain performance at a very fundamental level.

The main reason that neurofeedback is so effective is because of its ability to learn in response to the information it receives, called neuroplasticity. By using your brain’s inherent ability to seek information, digital visual and auditory cues are paired with certain brain wave activity, which further encourages the brain to reproduce the activity.

Specific neurofeedback training protocols are able to steer the brain into a more regulated and stable state, through the classical learning process of operant conditioning. This brain training modality does not require you to consciously exert any effort, although the brain is busy processing the audio and visual feedback it is receiving. By being gently guided to produce specific brain waves that influence a more desirable mood, behavior, performance and traits, neurofeedback can offer many individuals life changing, and even life saving results!

No matter how well brain performance functions, it can always function better! Perfection is more of a journey and less of a concrete destination, and when it comes to the function of the human nervous system, the limits of its functional ability still remain undiscovered.

How is the application of neurofeedback relevant to the practices and aims of Yoga?

The historical roots of Yoga practice have been inseparable from their direct effect on human physiology and neurobiology. Scientific and clinical investigations on the various therapeutic techniques of Yoga have documented not only physical health effects, such as low back pain, but cognitive and mental health improvement as well, implying an effect on brain function. The symmetry between the application of neurofeedback and the practice of Yoga converge on their effects on brain function. The fundamental similarity between neurofeedback and Yoga is that they are both based upon the brain's ability to learn, which means receiving feedback. Whether the brain learns and adjusts to the mechanical feedback of the muscular actions executed in a yoga pose, or learns and adjusts to the digitally generated visual or auditory feedback during a neurofeedback session, the common denominator is all the same. The brain's ability to receive signals from the environment and interpret which one's are more valid feedback and which are not, define the very basis of learning. Both Yoga and neurofeedback are not ends in themselves but rather a tool by which the brain learns a more efficient and healthy function. The function and health of the brain translate to an individual's quality of life, and more pro-social and ethical behavior that characterizes the devotional and spiritual principles of the Yogic tradition. What makes neurofeedback more effective in reinforcing the same brain activity that is reinforced in Yoga is simply that the technology of neurofeedback can more accurately track the brain than conscious awareness. This makes neurofeedback nothing more than essentially a prop we use in the physical practice. A modern verision of the yoga belt or block.
